Policy, strategy and reports
Our Sustainable Future
Our Sustainable Future provides a roadmap for how BCU will reduce its environmental impact, embed sustainability across the curriculum, and create positive social and economic change locally and globally. Developed through consultation with students and staff, the strategy aligns closely with our Strategy 2030 vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
The strategy is structured around three core workstreams:
- Creating a sustainable campus focuses on reducing carbon emissions, improving biodiversity, promoting sustainable travel and ensuring our estate is resilient to climate change.
- Creating a sustainable legacy embeds sustainability into education, research, decision-making and procurement, equipping our graduates with the skills and knowledge needed for a rapidly changing world.
- Creating sustainable communities centres on partnership, inclusion and engagement, empowering students, staff and local communities to co-create solutions that support wellbeing, equality and climate justice.
Together, these workstreams reflect a whole-institution approach, recognising that everyone at BCU has a role to play in delivering meaningful and lasting change.
Environmental Policy
Our Environmental Policy underpins the delivery of Our Sustainable Future. It sets out BCU's commitment to environmental responsibility, compliance and continuous improvement, supported by our ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS). The policy guides how we manage our environmental impacts, meet our legal obligations, and work collaboratively with students, staff and partners to protect and enhance the environment, now and for future generations.
Our reporting
Our sustainability and environmental progress against our objectives and KPIs is captured in an annual report, which is reported to the Board of Governors each year:
