As automotive companies move to increase their range of electric vehicles, we examine the shortage of UK talent facing the industry and what this means for the next generation.
The future is green
According to a recent article, only a fraction of electric vehicle (EV) talent is employed by automotive giants in the UK.
Whilst some may be going to other, lesser-known companies, it could also be a case of where the opportunities are. As the government moves towards the Net Zero goals, larger companies may need to revise how their current workforce can be upskilled to fill any gaps.
Recharge UK set out recommendations back in April 2024, which highlights how the country can make the most of local and national skills opportunities that will come with the EV industry.
How can we meet demand in the electric vehicle industry?
So how can organisations prepare their current workforce for learning new skills?
As the demand for Electric Vehicles increases, so will the production of them.
Training up the new incoming student population can help to plug the gaps that may appear within the industry. However, you shouldn’t rely heavily on this one possible recruitment stream.
Upskilling the current workforce would ensure you don’t experience challenges in the future. It also means the current workforce won’t be under skilled should they choose to move on.
Current workforces being able to work on both traditional petrol/diesel cars, hybrid and Electric Vehicles could prove to be highly valuable.
