Scott Trust Bursary

Fully funded MA Journalism bursary

We have partnered with The Guardian Foundation to offer a bursary for applicants to our MA Journalism course. The bursary aims to assist students who face financial difficulty in attaining the qualifications needed to pursue a career in journalism and come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the media. In particular those from working class backgrounds, Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ and people with a disability.

Those who are awarded the bursary receive...

  • Tuition fees for MA Journalism at Birmingham City University.

  • At least £7,415 in living expenses.

  • Paid work placements at The Guardian during your course.

  • A mentor, matched with you based on your professional interests and experiences.

  • The opportunity to take part in a 9 month fixed term traineeship.

Am I eligible for the Scott Trust Bursary?

You are eligible to apply for a Scott Trust Bursary if:

  • You will be a graduate in any subject
  • You will have had paid or unpaid experience in journalism and built up a portfolio - either news or features-focused (or a combination), and from either blogging in your spare time, writing for student newspapers, video, podcasts, or placements at local newspapers, radio or TV.
  • You will be able to demonstrate that without financial support you would be unable to pursue a Master's qualification.
  • You fall into one or more of these under-represented groups; Black, Asian, minority ethnic, LGBTQ+, disabled, or from a working class background.
  • You do not have any family connections to national news organisations.
  • You will qualify for home fees.
  • You will not already have a Master's degree or other postgraduate qualification.

Three out of the six places will be awarded to Black aspiring journalists. The other three places will remain open to applicants who come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the media. In particular those from working class backgrounds, Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ and people with a disability.

How do I apply?

The application deadline is Monday 23 March at 5pm. You can apply through The Guardian's 'work for us' platform. Your Bursary application doubles as your application to the course. Get more information on how to apply on The Guardian Foundation's website.

As part of your application, you'll be asked to fill in a questionnaire, submit examples of your work, attend interviews and complete a written task.  Get some top tips from The Guardian Foundation on your application.

What happens next?

After submitting the online questionnaire and examples of your work, your application will be considered. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to a virtual interview.
