Pianist Sir Stephen Hough

Birmingham International Piano Festival: Celebrity Recital - Sir Stephen Hough

Schubert Klavierstück, D946 No.2
Brahms Klavierstück, Op.118 No.6
Schoenberg Six Little Piano Pieces
Stockhausen Klavierstück III
Beethoven Bagatelle, Op.119 No.10
Beethoven Sonata No.21, Op.53 ‘Waldstein’
Schumann Carnaval
Sherman arr. Hough Mary Poppins Suite

The incomparable Sir Stephen Hough, arguably Britain’s finest living pianist, gives a sparkling celebrity recital to conclude the five-day Birmingham International Piano Festival.  A world-renowned musician – a “keyboard colossus” in the words of the Guardian – Sir Stephen is one of the most distinctive artists of his generation and combines a distinguished career as a pianist with those of composer and writer.

His dazzling programme opens with Klavierstücke (literally, Piano Pieces) in their various forms, from Schubert’s lilting piece, written just six months before his death, and Brahms’s delicate Intermezzo, to pared-down Schoenberg and avant-garde Stockhausen.  Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata, noted especially for the brilliance of its finale, forms the centrepiece alongside the revelries of Schumann’s Carnaval.  Hough’s own characterful arrangements are always a joy to encounter and his selection from the 1964 film Mary Poppins is sure to end the concert – and the Festival – on a high.

Running time approx. two hours
